Walid Regragui, the head coach of the Atlas Lions of Morocco has expressed his side’s desire to go all the way and emerge champions of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The 57-year- old made the bold claim during Tuesday’s pre-match presser in the build up to tonight’s semi final showdown against holders France at the Al Bayt Stadium.
According to the ex-Wydad Casablanca coach, bypassing the present opportunity to win Africa’s first ever FIFA World Cup trophy may mean another a wait for 40 years before getting the next opportunity.
“We are not here to kid around and we are not tired. We want to rewrite the history books for our brothers in North Africa, for Egyptians, Libyans – all those who dreamed of seeing an African team in a semi-final. I don’t want to wait another 40 years to give another African team a chance.”
Walid Regragui’s Morocco are ready to go down in history for themselves, for all of Africa and for every underdog who competes against the best.
The ride to the last four has been outstanding with wins against Belgium, Spain, Canada, Portugal and a draw against vice champions Croatia.
Morocco who have conceded one goal (own goal) in the competition will be looking to keep their title chase alive with a win against the holders who have also been in scintillating form.
Walid admits his side may not dominate opponents but says they will always be purposeful and play for results even if it’s not appealing to some.
“European Journalists do not like African teams playing like Europeans. In the past, they were seen as teams who played for fun but were not effective. Those days are over. We’re very ambitious and hungry. We want Africa to be top of the world”.
Morocco are Africa’s first ever World Cup semi-finalist. If they eliminate France and get to the final against Argentina it will be more success for Walid, his team, Moroccan and African football.
