Indomitable Lions of Cameroon became the first African team to defeat Brazil at the FIFA World Cup as Vincent Aboubakar’s late goal stunned Canarinho’s side in a 1-0 victory.
Ahead of the game, Cameroon’s hope of progressing into the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in 32 years hinged on a victory against five-time World Champions.
Brazil made nine changes after qualifying early from a record tenth consecutive group stage with a late 1-0 win over Switzerland.
Having scored all three of their World Cup goals in the second half, Brazil started applying pressure and Martinelli’s curled effort was palmed over the crossbar by Empassy.
Both sides had half chances late on and Cameroon eventually struck the final blow when Vincent Aboubakar headed in Jerome Mbekeli’s cross only to be sent off for a second bookable offence by removing his shirt in celebration.
Cameroon produced a valiant display to defeat second-string Brazil but the victory was not enough to prevent another early World Cup exit for the Indomitable Lions.
Brazil rarely threatened and looked disjointed in defeat.
Although, Tite’s decision to rest key players could prove fruitful in the knockout stage.
Brazil tops Group G with six points ahead of Switzerland (6 points), Cameroon (4 points), and Serbia (1 points).
