Cameroonian striker Taddeus Nkeng delivered the decisive moment as Club Africain defeated TP Mazembe 1-0 in Radès on Sunday to book their place in the CAF Champions League group stage.
With the first leg in Lubumbashi ending 1-1, everything was still to play for in Tunisia. Club Africain struggled to create clear openings during the first half, but Nkeng struck at the perfect moment, scoring in first-half stoppage time to give the hosts a priceless advantage.
The goal came after Hamza Khadhraoui capitalised on a defensive mistake from Mazembe before finding Nkeng, who made no mistake from close range. His finish sent the home supporters into celebration and gave Club Africain the lead heading into the interval.
Mazembe pushed hard for an equaliser after the restart, knowing another goal would change the tie. Club Africain, however, defended with determination to preserve their advantage and complete a 2-1 aggregate victory over the five-time African champions.
The qualification represents a major return to the continent’s elite competition for Club Africain, who had last reached the Champions League group stage in the 2018-19 season. The Tunisian giants will now join the continent’s leading clubs when the group-stage campaign begins.
For Nkeng, the night adds another important chapter to his growing African football story. The Cameroonian forward had already played a role in Club Africain’s earlier qualifying success, and his latest goal proved to be the difference against one of Africa’s most decorated clubs.
Cameroonian midfielder Ryan Tettego is also part of the Club Africain story, giving the Tunisian side a strong Cameroonian presence as they return to the Champions League group stage. For the two compatriots, the continental adventure now enters an even bigger stage.
