Simon Ngapandouetnbu’s Cameroon story began long before he pulled on the senior Indomitable Lions shirt. In 2019, while still only 16 and developing at Olympique de Marseille, the young goalkeeper was identified by Cameroon as one of the promising talents who could strengthen the country’s U17 generation ahead of the FIFA U17 World Cup in Brazil. His name appeared among the young diaspora players being considered for the Cameroon U17 setup.

Born in Foumban on April 12, 2003, Ngapandouetnbu grew up in Yaoundé before moving to France at the age of six. He started playing football in Marseille and eventually joined Olympique de Marseille’s academy, where he developed into a goalkeeper inspired by Cameroon legend Steve Mandanda. OM trusted his potential so much that he handed him a professional contract in October 2019, when he was just 16.

His development continued through the Marseille reserves, where he made around 40 appearances, before a loan spell at Nîmes gave him his first sustained experience at senior level. He played 26 matches for Nîmes in the 2024/25 season and subsequently joined Montpellier in August 2025. The move opened a new chapter, and he quickly established himself as one of the more promising young goalkeepers in French football.

The road to becoming Cameroon’s senior goalkeeper was not straightforward. Ngapandouetnbu was part of the Cameroon squad at the 2022 FIFA World Cup as a third-choice goalkeeper and later featured with the U23s during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. He also received a France U19 call-up in 2021, but his international future ultimately remained with Cameroon.

Then came the moment he had been waiting for. On March 31, 2026, Ngapandouetnbu made his senior Cameroon debut against China in the FIFA Series in Australia. The Lions won 2-0 and the young goalkeeper immediately marked his first appearance with a clean sheet.

Fast-forward to October 2026 and Ngapandouetnbu is beginning to look increasingly comfortable at international level. After watching from the bench during Cameroon’s opening AFCON 2027 qualifiers against Comoros and Congo, he returned to the starting XI against Côte d’Ivoire on October 3. Cameroon won 1-0 in Abidjan, and once again the Montpellier goalkeeper finished the night without conceding.

It was not merely a quiet night behind a dominant defence. Ngapandouetnbu produced an important save from Ibrahim Sangaré in the first half and was again called upon to deny Yan Diomandé after the break. His performance earned him a 7.5/10 rating from one of the post-match assessments, underlining his growing confidence between the posts.

Two senior appearances. Two clean sheets. Two wins. For a goalkeeper who first entered Cameroon’s radar as a teenage U17 prospect in Marseille, Ngapandouetnbu’s journey is beginning to come full circle. At 23, and now gaining regular experience with Montpellier, the goalkeeper has given Cameroon another reason to believe that the next generation between the posts could be in safe hands.
