Cameroon face one of their biggest tests of the current international window when they take on Côte d’Ivoire in a heavyweight friendly at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Ebimpé, Abidjan, this Saturday.

The encounter brings together two of Africa’s traditional football powers and offers both sides an opportunity to measure their progress against high-level opposition. Although no competitive points are at stake, there is plenty of history between the two sides and neither will want to come out second best.

This will be the 22nd meeting between the two senior sides. Their previous 21 encounters have produced eight wins for Cameroon, eight for Côte d’Ivoire and five draws, with Cameroon having scored 25 goals to Côte d’Ivoire’s 23. The balance is even overall, underlining just how competitive this rivalry has been over the years.

At the Africa Cup of Nations, however, Cameroon have enjoyed the stronger record. The teams have met eight times, with the Indomitable Lions winning five, drawing two and losing just once. Cameroon have scored 11 goals in those meetings and conceded only four.

The most recent meeting ended 1-1 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, adding another chapter to a rivalry that has stretched back more than five decades.

Côte d’Ivoire arrive in Abidjan with a perfect start to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. The Elephants defeated Ghana 2-0 in Bouaké before recording another 2-0 victory away to Somalia. They have therefore scored four goals without conceding in their opening two qualifiers.

Hervé Renard, back for a second spell in charge of the Elephants, has already begun introducing new players into the Ivorian setup while retaining an experienced core. Franck Kessié remains an important figure in midfield, with the coach also looking to younger players to establish themselves in the national team.

Cameroon have had a similarly positive, although less perfect, start to their AFCON qualifying campaign.

The Indomitable Lions opened with a convincing 3-1 victory over Comoros in Garoua before being held to a 1-1 draw by Congo in Brazzaville. Cameroon have therefore scored four goals and conceded two in their opening two qualifiers.

The numbers from the Comoros game showed the attacking intent of David Pagou’s team. Cameroon recorded 24 shots, enjoyed 66 percent possession and completed 498 passes at a 91 percent accuracy rate.

The draw in Congo was a different type of test. Cameroon fell behind before an own goal restored parity early in the second half, but the Lions could not find a winner despite controlling important periods of the encounter.

Saturday’s match therefore gives Pagou another opportunity to assess how his team responds against stronger opposition. The Cameroon coach is still working on establishing his preferred style and identifying the right balance between experienced players and emerging talents.

Captain Bryan Mbeumo will be one of the players expected to carry much of Cameroon’s attacking responsibility. The Manchester United forward has already described the fixture as an important challenge and expects another closely fought encounter between two sides familiar with each other.

For Cameroon, the midfield battle will be crucial. Côte d’Ivoire have the experience and physical presence of players such as Kessié, while the Lions will look to their own midfield energy and attacking pace to disrupt the Elephants.

The home side also have an impressive recent record in competitive football. Côte d’Ivoire have won their last two AFCON qualifiers by identical 2-0 scorelines, while Cameroon have won one and drawn one in their opening two matches. Both teams have also shown defensive solidity, with Côte d’Ivoire yet to concede in the current AFCON qualifying campaign.

Another interesting statistic adds intrigue to the fixture: Cameroon have not beaten Côte d’Ivoire in a friendly. The Lions’ victories in this rivalry have largely come in competitive encounters, while Côte d’Ivoire have had the better results in friendly meetings.

That makes Saturday’s meeting an intriguing test for Pagou and his players. Cameroon will be looking to combine the attacking promise shown against Comoros with the defensive discipline required to contain an experienced Ivorian side.

For Renard, the game provides another opportunity to test his rebuilding project against a major African opponent. For Pagou, it is a chance to demonstrate that his new-look Indomitable Lions can compete with one of the continent’s established powers.

The history points to a tight contest. The current form suggests both sides have enough quality to hurt the other, while their recent meetings underline just how difficult it can be to separate them.

With the two teams separated by only one goal in their last five meetings, another closely fought encounter could be on the cards when the whistle goes in Ebimpé.

Kick-off: 7:00 PM GMT at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium, Abidjan.
