By the time Carlos Baleba walks onto the pitch at Old Trafford, the Manchester United midfielder will be carrying more than the expectations of one of the biggest clubs in world football. He will also carry the story of a young boy from Douala whose journey began on Cameroon’s football fields.

Manchester United officially confirmed the signing of the Cameroon international from Brighton & Hove Albion on Tuesday, bringing to an end a remarkable rise that has taken Baleba from grassroots football in Douala to the biggest stage in English football.

The 22-year-old has signed a contract running until 2031, with an option for a further year. The transfer is reported to be worth up to £70 million, making Baleba one of the most expensive Cameroonian footballers ever.

But long before the millions, the Premier League and Old Trafford, Baleba was simply a talented youngster trying to make his way in Cameroon.

The Douala beginning

Born in Douala, Baleba first developed his football at Futur Soccer FC, where he initially played as a winger.

His talent soon attracted attention, and at the age of 13 he joined the École de Football des Brasseries du Cameroun (EFBC) — one of the country’s most recognised football academies.

It was at EFBC that Baleba’s career began to take a decisive turn.

He was moved into midfield, where his physical strength, ability to carry the ball and understanding of the game began to stand out.

The academy provided the platform for Baleba to develop before European scouts came calling.

Lille: the European breakthrough

In January 2022, Baleba left Cameroon for France to join Lille.

The move was a major step for a player who had spent his formative years in Douala, but Baleba adapted quickly.

He initially featured for Lille’s reserve side before breaking into the first team under coach Paulo Fonseca.

On 7 August 2022, he made his professional debut against Auxerre in Ligue 1.

Within months, the teenager who had started his journey in Cameroon had become one of the most exciting young midfielders in French football.

Brighton and the Premier League

Baleba’s performances at Lille earned him a move to Brighton & Hove Albion in August 2023.

Brighton invested heavily in the young midfielder, seeing in him the qualities needed to succeed in the demanding Premier League.

He gradually established himself in the English top flight, developing into a powerful and dynamic midfielder capable of winning possession, driving forward with the ball and covering large areas of the pitch.

Across three seasons, Baleba made more than 100 appearances for Brighton, gaining valuable Premier League experience and attracting the attention of some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Manchester United come calling

Manchester United had been monitoring Baleba for some time.

After previous interest failed to produce a deal, the Red Devils returned for the Cameroon international this summer and eventually reached an agreement with Brighton.

United see Baleba as an important part of their midfield rebuild.

His energy, physicality, ball-winning ability and capacity to play as a defensive or box-to-box midfielder are qualities that Manchester United believe can strengthen their squad.

For Baleba, however, the move represents much more than another transfer.

It is the fulfilment of a dream.

The midfielder has spoken openly about his admiration for Manchester United and his desire to reach the highest level of the game.

From Cameroon to Old Trafford

Baleba’s journey is also a reminder of the role played by Cameroon’s football development structures in producing elite talent.

From Futur Soccer FC, to EFBC, then Lille, Brighton and now Manchester United, his career has followed a path that began far from the spotlight of European football.

He is now one of the faces of a new generation of Cameroonian footballers carrying the hopes of the Indomitable Lions.

At Manchester United, the expectations will be enormous.

But Baleba has already travelled a remarkable distance.

From the streets and football fields of Douala to the Theatre of Dreams — Carlos Baleba’s Cameroon story has reached a spectacular new chapter.
