Cameroonian basketball coach Ahmed Mbombo Njoya has reached a major milestone in his coaching career after being appointed head coach of Greek basketball powerhouse Olympiacos B.C.
The appointment marks a new chapter for the Greek giants following a frustrating campaign that ended without silverware, prompting the club to seek fresh leadership ahead of the new season.
Ahmed Mbombo Njoya arrives with a growing reputation built on tactical discipline, strong man-management skills, and experience on the international stage. He is widely known in African basketball circles for guiding Cameroon women’s national basketball team to a bronze medal finish at the 2021 Women’s Afrobasket tournament, one of the country’s notable recent achievements in women’s basketball.
At Olympiacos, the Cameroonian tactician will face the demanding task of rebuilding confidence within the squad while restoring the club’s dominance in both Greek and European basketball. The challenge is expected to be intense, especially with the increasing financial and sporting power of leading Turkish clubs continuing to reshape the European basketball landscape.
Beyond basketball, Ahmed Mbombo Njoya also carries a prominent cultural legacy. He is the son of the late Sultan Ibrahim Mbombo Njoya of the Bamoun Kingdom, one of Cameroon’s most respected traditional rulers. His rise to one of Europe’s biggest basketball benches therefore represents both a sporting and symbolic achievement for Cameroon.
His appointment further reflects the growing recognition of African coaches on the international scene, as more tacticians from the continent continue to earn opportunities at elite clubs and competitions around the world.
