Cameroon international Andre Onana is one game away from silverware again after helping Trabzonspor qualify for the 2025/26 Turkish Cup final following a dramatic 2-1 comeback win over Gençlerbirliği in Wednesday’s semi-final.
Trabzonspor had to dig deep after falling behind in the second half at the Eryaman Stadium. The hosts opened the scoring in the 62nd minute through 17-year-old Erk Arda Aslan, who netted his first professional goal to put Gençlerbirliği ahead.
With elimination looming, Trabzonspor responded late in the contest. The equaliser came in the 78th minute when Gençlerbirliği defender Arda Çağan Çelik turned the ball into his own net, restoring parity for the visitors. Just when extra time looked inevitable, Ernest Muçi struck in stoppage time (90+2’) with a superb finish to complete the turnaround and send Trabzonspor into the final.
Onana started in goal and played the full 90 minutes, safely guiding Trabzonspor through key moments before the late attacking heroics sealed qualification. The Cameroonian goalkeeper has been instrumental throughout the cup campaign, having earlier starred in the quarter-final by saving three penalties against Samsunspor to help Trabzonspor eliminate the Black Sea rivals.
Trabzonspor will now face Konyaspor in the Turkish Cup final on May 22 in Antalya, with Onana eyeing yet another medal in a career defined by silverware. Remarkably, the former Ajax, Inter Milan and Manchester United goalkeeper has maintained his tradition of winning at least one trophy at every club he has represented.
Victory in the final would see Onana preserve that remarkable streak while adding Turkish Cup glory to his already decorated résumé.
