The home-based Uganda Cranes continued their impressive run in the TotalEnergies CAF CHAN 2024 securing a 2-0 victory over Niger on Monday, August 11, at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Kampala.

The victory marked their second consecutive group triumph, propelling them to the top of Group C with a superior goal difference.

Strong Return After Sluggish Start

After a disappointing 3-0 loss to Algeria in their opening game, Uganda bounced back with a 3-0 win over Guinea in game two, demonstrating their ability to regroup and adapt in the wake of hostilities. Allan Okello and his teammates maintained momentum, delivering another stellar performance to claim their second victory in the tournament and solidifying their position as top contenders.

Early Goal Sets the Tone

Coach Morley Byekwaso’s tactical approach paid off early, as Uganda’s determination and attacking intent were evident from the start.

Just 25 minutes into the match, a penalty kick was awarded after review by the video assistant referees (VAR) for a clear handball in the 18-yard box.

Winger, Allan Okello confidently converted from the spot with a precise finish, giving his team the lead and adding to his goals tally (2) in the tournament.

Niger’s Attempted Recovery

In an effort to turn the game around, Niger’s coach, Douala Harouna, introduced Salifu Danga and Moussa Modou in the 37th minute, hoping to inject fresh energy into the team and exploit Uganda’s defensive vulnerabilities. Despite these changes, Niger struggled to breach Uganda’s defense, which employed a solid back four and effectively neutralized Niger’s attacking threats.

The first half ended with Uganda in the lead, having successfully contained Niger’s attempts to equalize.

Serungoji Seals the Win

The second half saw Uganda adopt an attacking strategy, utilizing swift counter-attacks and precise passing to create scoring opportunities. This approach paid off when midfielder Joel Serungoji scored the second goal in the 56th minute, following a perfectly weighted pass by Allan Okello.

This goal solidified Uganda’s dominance and gave them a comfortable lead, sparking jubilation among the fans at the Nelson Mandela National Stadium.

Niger’s Fall’s Short

Despite their efforts, Niger, led by Coach Harouna Douala, failed to create significant scoring opportunities, largely due to Uganda’s well-organized defense and effective pressing.

Substitute Theodore Kobinu was introduced in the 64th minute in a bid to reduce the deficit, but Uganda’s defense, marshaled by defender Hilary Mukundan and goalkeeper Joel Mutakubwa, remained solid, keeping a clean sheet throughout the match and showcasing their defensive prowess.

Implications of the Result

This victory has propelled Uganda to the top of Group C with six points, overtaking Algeria and positioning them as strong contenders for the quarterfinals. Niger, on the other hand, remains without points after two matches, facing an uphill battle to advance in the tournament. The win has intensified the competition in Group C, setting the stage for a fierce battle between Uganda, Algeria, and South Africa as they vie for a spot in the quarterfinals.
