First-time league champions Colombe Sportive du Sud are set to face Senegal’s ASC Jaraaf in the first preliminary round of the 2025 CAF Champions League. The draw, conducted on Saturday, August 9, has set the stage for this exciting continental clash.
After an impressive 2024/2025 campaign crowned by their maiden league title under coach Richard Towa, Colombe will now test their mettle on the continental stage. The two-legged tie is scheduled to kick off on September 19–21, 2025, with the return leg set for September 26–28 in Dakar.
Colombe’s rise has been swift and remarkable. Their league victory this season capped a period of success that includes winning the Cameroonian Cup and Super Cup last season, signaling a club on the up. They will enter this tie as underdogs, facing a well-oiled and experienced opponent in ASC Jaraaf.
ASC Jaraaf, based in Dakar, is Senegal’s most successful club, boasting a rich palmarès that commands respect across Africa. Founded in 1933, Jaraaf has claimed the Senegal Premier League title 13 times, the latest just this year in 2025, where they secured the championship with a commanding 4-1 victory over ASC HLM. The club also holds 16 Senegalese National Cups, underlining their domestic dominance.
On the continental front, ASC Jaraaf is no stranger to CAF competitions. They have regularly participated in the CAF Champions League with over 54 matches played and the CAF Confederation Cup, often progressing deep into the tournaments.
Their tactical discipline, strong squad depth, and winning mentality have earned them group stage appearances and quarter-final runs, making them a formidable adversary for any newcomer.
The last time ASC Jaraaf faced a Cameroonian side in continental competition was in the 2020 CAF Confederation Cup quarter-finals against Coton Sport de Garoua.
Jaraaf were narrowly eliminated after a 1-0 home defeat followed by a 1-1 draw in Garoua. This history adds an extra layer of intrigue as they prepare to meet Colombe for the first time.
Colombe are expected to bolster their squad ahead of the clash, with a new signing announcement reportedly imminent. This could prove crucial as they navigate their debut Champions League campaign.
If Colombe progress beyond the first preliminary round, they will meet the winner of the FC Fassell (Liberia) vs MC Alger (Algeria) tie in the second preliminary round, scheduled for mid to late October.
The past years have been particularly lean for Cameroonian football on the CAF Champions League stage. The country’s representatives have consistently struggled to get past the early preliminary rounds, with Victoria United group stage run in 2024 being a sour memory.
This lack of success has seen Cameroonian clubs fall behind their counterparts from North and South Africa, who have dominated the competition. The Doves will be looking to not only make a name for themselves but also to restore a sense of pride for Cameroonian football, hoping to break a cycle of early exits and once again make a deep run in the CAF Champions League.
