Cameroonian defender Junior Tchamadeu lasted thr duration as Divin Mubama and Sorba Thomas marked their Stoke City debuts with goals to ensure the Potters recover from 1-0 down to defeat Derby County 3-1 in their first League game of the championship season.
The hosts dominated and created the best clear cut opportunities in the game but were made to come from behind to get their first three points in their first outing of the season.
Carlton Morris had opened the scoring with a breakaway goal for the visitors but Derby hit back through a delightful finish from Lewis Baker.
The equalizer handed the initiative to debutant duo to delight the home crowd with injury time goals that secured all three points for Mark Robins’ men.
As the new campaign commenced, the Potters’ home faithful provided a rapturous pre-match welcome to returning midfielder Steven Nzonzi, who will work his way towards match fitness before featuring for the lads in red and white in the coming weeks.
As the contest got underway, the Potters burst out of the gate full of energy and, inside the opening two minutes, Million Manhoef floated a delightful cross towards Bae Junho, but the South Korean’s header was claimed by Jacob Widell Zetterström.
Three minutes later, Junior Tchamadeu’s halfway line punt picked out the run of Thomas, who collected the ball out of the sky before firing an acrobatic strike into the hands of the Rams’ keeper.
After the Welsh winger then won the Potters a free-kick with a dancing inside run, the ball was laid off to Aaron Cresswell who sent his effort from range wide of the post.
Midway through the first half, an inswinging cross from Cresswell found the head of Bosun Lawal, but the central defender diverted his header just wide.
As the first half entered additional time, Mubama played a neat one-two with Manhoef but saw his 20-yard strike saved by Zetterström.
In the 60th minute, Derby broke the deadlock as Carlton Morris volleyed home Corey Blackett-Taylor’s cross following an incisive breakaway by the visitors.
Moments later, Manhoef threaded the ball through to Thomas, who rounded the ‘keeper but fired his effort into the side netting from a tight angle.
Twenty minutes from time, Baker latched-on to Thomas’ delightful lay-off before bending an inch-perfect strike into the bottom corner to level the game.
Derby’s substitute Andreas Weimann fired a free-kick just wide of the far post, before Tchamadeu saw his powerful left-footed strike from 20 yards saved by the fingertips of Zetterström.
In the 94th minute, substitute Tatsuki Seko’s pinpoint cross was headed home with inch-perfect precision by Mubama to give the Potters a deserved lead.
The comeback was completed four minutes later, as debutant Jamie Donley became the second super-sub to provide an assist, driving into the box before laying-off for Thomas to slide home his first goal in red and white.
