CHAN 2022: CAF gives special status to Group C after Morocco’s boycott

The Confederation Of African Football CAF, has confirmed that Group C at the 2022 African Nations championship in Algeria, will continue with three teams after Morocco boycotted the tournament.

Defending champions Morocco, did not travel to Constantine where Group C is based, after their request for an authorization to allow them take a direct flight from Rabat to Constantine, was not met. A dispute between Morocco and Neighboring Algeria, had led to the cancellation of direct flights between both countries.

Morocco’s boycott, left Group C with just three teams, Madagascar, Sudan and Ghana.

Now CAF has confirmed that Group C will continue with three teams, but the special consideration is that the top two teams in that group will qualify for the next phase of the competition, unlike the other two groups of three teams, where just the top teams will sail through.

“The Confédération Africaine de Football (“CAF”) Organising Committee for the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (“CHAN”) Algeria 2022 met today in accordance with the Regulations in Algiers. The Committee decided that Group C will be composed of three teams and the first two teams will qualify for the knockout stages,” CAF wrote in an official statement on Monday.

“The Organising Committee has referred the matter of Morocco no show at yesterday’s scheduled fixture against Sudan to the competent judicial body,” they added.

Madagascar currently sits top of Group C after their 2#1win over Ghana on Sunday. Ghana and Sudan who have zero point each, will battle to feature amongst the top two in the group, but the recent decision from CAF is definitely good news for Madagascar, who are just one step away from a historic quarter final at the CHAN.
