CAF halt FECAFOOT’s plans to ‘destroy’ Njitap

The Secretary General of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has asked the Cameroon football federation (FECAFOOT) to immediately halt all activities in preparations of the ban of Geremi Sorel Njitap Fotso and transfer the case to Cairo given the concerned is accused of violations vis-a-vis a CAF event.

In a letter signed by Veron Mosengo-Omba and sent to FECAFOOT on May 6, the continental body has told FECAFOOT Njitap can only be disciplined by the organizers of the competition he is accused to have breeched rules.

The letter tagged ‘Request for Clarification’ and addressed to Blaise Djounang of FECAFOOT reads;

“I am writing to you today to bring to your attention a matter of concern regarding Mr. Geremi Njitap.

“Following the match between Cameroon and Gambia during the group stage of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations 2023 in Côte d’Ivoire, it has been alleged that Mr. Njitap entered the dressing rooms reserved for the Cameroon national team without authorization. As a result, and based on the information we have received, FECAFOOT is reportedly considering taking measures that could potentially hinder Mr. Njitap’s ability to participate in football-related activities.

“Given that the alleged incident occurred during an official CAF competition, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) would have exclusive jurisdiction to hear this matter. If this is the case, we request that you cease any proceedings that may be underway and transmit to CAF all necessary documentation and relevant evidence. We look forward to your prompt response and assure you of our highest consideration.”

For starters, Eto’o and Njitap had engaged in an open war after the latter was denied access to the Indomitable Lions dressing room in the wake of Cameroon’s 3-2 win against The Gambia during their third group game of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Bouake – Côte D’Ivoire.

Geremi reacted to the situation in his capacity as president of the Cameroon professional football syndicate (SYNAFOC). He issued a Communiqué weeks after the end of the AFCON to decry the situation.

A few days later, Eto’o’s FECAFOOT fired back, by summoning the SYNAFOC Secretary in a letter they accused him of bringing the institution to disrepute.

Since then there has been a dangerous calm from both camps with SYNAFOC reportedly on a mission to ban Geremi for life. The question on some lips has been why will Eto’o witch-hunt the other of Cameroon’s most celebrated footballers? Some have been quick to say he is facing the consequences of manifesting interest in the FECAFOOT president position currently held by Eto’o.

Both stunt social media on Saturday evening after photos of the legends together surfaced weeks after their standoff.

We reported that it looked like the path to Peace between presidents Geremi of SYNAFOC and FECAFOOT’s Eto’o, even if it was starting on a foreign soil and encouraged fans who had engaged in crossfire in the past months as part of the business of showing love for either legend to mellow down and encourage them to get together as one.

Unfortunately, this new twist has made it such that the wound is reopened especially as the World now knows Eto’o was planning to ‘do away with’ Geremi.

It remains to be seen if CAF will take actions against Geremi who was CAF’s guest at the said AFCON in his capacity as FIFPRO Africa vice president.

Geremi is the umpteenth person Eto’o has ‘opened fire’ against since he became president of the association of a game (football) that was once prided as the source of unity of Cameroonians.
