Carlos Yougouda’s second half goal was enough for defending champions Cotonsport of Garoua to earn a slim 1-0 win against Colombe of Dja and pick up their first victory of the 2023/24 MTN Elite One championship.
The defending champions silenced the huge Colombe fans that were at the Mbappe Leppe stadium on Thursday afternoon and sent a statement of their intent at this edition of the playoffs.
Colombe who had three points before the contest kicked off had an eventful first 45 minutes against a Cotonsport side chasing their first victory of the playoffs and their fourth title in a row. Unfortunately, either side couldn’t make the most of their chances.
Yougouda noted for scoring important goals for the club lived up to his billing again when he beat Nfor Idriss with an excellent shot just minutes after the teams resumed for the second segment.
Kada’s 52nd minute strike sanctioned the game in favor of the record champions. Lako Wendeu Merlin made a number of saves to deny coach Richard Towa’s team and preserve the Coton advantage in the afternoon nothing worked for Colombe.
The game ended on the 1-0 score which puts Cotonsport back in the exciting title race with four points from their opening two games in this edition of the playoffs.
Cotonsport moves up to the third spot in the mini eight clubs championship while Colombe drops to the fourth spot with three points.
Coton face struggling Canon Yaoundé in match day three of the championship while Colombe face Stade Renard of Melong in match day three this Sunday.
