Algerian giants, USM Alger have clinched their first-ever CAF Super Cup trophy, courtesy a 1-0 win against Al Ahly SC on Friday evening.
Captain Zineddine Belaid’s scored the lone goal to help USM edge record winners, Al Ahly SC at the packed King Fahd International Stadium in Taif, Saudi Arabia to win the 2023 CAF Super Cup.
Belaid converted the 42nd minute penalty awarded by Gabonese Referee Pierre Atcho with the help of VAR after the ball hit an Al Ahly player in the penalty area.
The goal from the spot turned out to be the decisive moment of the game. USM foiled all comeback attempts from the Red Devils to earn the champions tag after the final whistle.
It turned out to be a landmark night for coach Abdelhak Benchikha and his team as they held on. Though Ali Maaloul and substitute Mohamed Afsha coming close, they couldn’t level scores.
The 2023 CAF Confederation Cup champions in their first appearance will return to Algeria with their first-ever Super Cup title, dethroning Al Ahly SC, who won the last two editions.
Al Ahly SC fails to add to their Egyptian Premier League win and their success in the CAF Champions League under coach Marcel Kohler this season.
