- Faris Moumbagna sustains injury just few minutes into the game against Brestois
- The severity of his injury, as announced by the medical staff of Marseille, holds that he will undergo surgery in the coming week
- Meanwhile was able to secure a 5-1 victory against Brestois
In a twisted turn of events for Olympique Marseille, Faris Moumbagna suffers a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee during their recent Ligue 1 match against Stade Brestois.
The 24-year-old Cameroonian international was substituted onto the field in the second half, shortly after Marseille had secured a convincing 5-1 victory. However, the celebration was cut short when Moumbagna sustained the injury just minutes after coming on, necessitating his immediate removal from the pitch.
The club’s medical staff have since confirmed the severity of the injury, with Moumbagna scheduled to undergo surgery next week. In a latter Olympique Marseille expressed their deepest sympathies for Moumbagna while wishing him a speedy recovery.
“Faris injured during the game against Stade Brestois last Saturday, suffers from a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee,” the latter read. “The surgical procedure is scheduled for next week. Olympique de Marseille wishes Faris a speedy recovery and hope to see him on the pitch as quickly as possible.”
The news comes as a significant blow to Marseille, who had made an impressive start to the new Ligue 1 season. The club currently sits atop the ligue table after the opening round, and they are hoping to be the leading contenders for the French championship.
Roberto de Zerbi’s debut as Marseille had also started on a positive note, with the 5-1 victory over Brestois. However, with Moumbagna out of the pitch, Marseille is left with no choice as the club scramble to find a suitable replacement in the meantime.
