Canon Yaounde forward Emmanuel Mahop scored a brace to earn a 2-0 win for Canon against Aigle Royal of Menoua this Saturday in match day 19 of the 2022/23 MTN Elite One championship at the Ngoa Ekelle stadium.
The League’s current top scorer scored a second-half brace to take his season tally to 12 goals and ensure coach Souleymanou Aboubakar’s men stay in the lead in Pool A of the championship, and keep their playoff qualification chances alive.
Though Aigle played well in the five 45 minutes of the game, they left empty-handed courtesy of a great second segment performance from Mahop.
The Cameroon international was kept quiet in the first 45 minutes but had enough to make the difference.
Mahop scored the first three minutes into the second segment and added another three minutes from time as the Mekok Megunda registered their ninth win of the season.
Though David Pagou’s Aigle had their fair share of chances and moments in the game, Jourdaine Mbainayssem on goal for Canon Yaounde denied them on a number of occasions.
The game finished 2-0 for Canon who take their tally to 35 points – needing just a draw in the last round of matches next weekend to confirm their spot in the title playoff.
Direct rivals, Cotonsport and UMS all won in their match day 19 fixture to take their points tally to 33, thus making the two play off spots open to three clubs going into match day 20.
