Popular South West-based footballer, Ekema Njoku has announced his retirement from competitive football.

The versatile defender had an outstanding career that sprung 14 years and five clubs, including a spell with Galaxie Liberte of Yaoundé, where he played between 2013-2015.

Njoku’s career began taking shape shortly after participating in the popular Brasseries football U13 tournament (Top Cup), from where he was selected as one of the top talents to represent the academy, although his induction into the academy didn’t materialize.

Following his decision to quit the game, Njoku says his dream at the start of his career was to represent Njalla Quan Sports Academy, who at the time were in the elite division of Cameroon football, but that dream never turned into reality.

While representing different clubs in the South West Region, Njoku’s dream changed to wanting to play in the round of 64 in the Cup of Cameroon. A feat which he achieved with Cinyodev FA this season.

The inspirational football had two stints with Buea United, and Prisons SC of Buea. He also represented the colors of FMA before he joined Cinyodev FA, where he spent the last three years of his career.

Throughout his time, Njoku has played all over the pitch, counting out the goalkeeping position, working with some of the best tacticians in the South West.

With wedding bells ringing and a new career path in sight, Njoku says, the time has come for him to leave the pitch.

“I am closing the football chapter. Now I will be encouraging and promoting kids. I will now also focus on my journalism career”, he wrote on his social media handle.

Njoku has been classified by many as one of the most talented footballers to have come through from the region, and his contribution to the game on and off the pitch remains a legacy.
The now retired football is pursuing a Masters Degree.
