  • Ousmanou Christophe Bonaventure has taken charge of his first training session as Fovu of Baham lead trainer
  • The team is gearing up to face Paynesville FC of Liberia in the Confederation Cup, with the first-leg game scheduled for mid-August
  • Coach Ousmanou’s immediate challenge is to rebuild the squad after several key players left, leveraging his extensive experience in continental competitions

2023 Cup of Cameroon winners and the country’s representative in the 2024/25 CAF Confederation Cup, Fovu of Baham made their first steps in preparations for their first preliminary round clash against Liberia’s Paynesville FC this Friday in Baffoussam.

The Yongwa Boys made their baby steps in preparations for the August meeting at the historic Stade de Chifferie in Baffoussam under new head coach, Christophe Ousmanou.

Relegated to Cameroon’s top tier, with many of its Cup of Cameroon-winning players off the team, Coach Ousmanou’s immediate task will be to assemble a squad capable of challenging.

Less than ten players (mostly newcomers) took part in what was also the first session in the coach Ousmanou era.

The players went through different drills in the dusty surface pitch under the guidance of the technical crew before retiring to their base with an appointment taken for this Saturday.

Coach Ousmanou is expected to have a larger group of players in training this Saturday at the same venue.

Despite the challenging start, the gaffer is expected to steady the ship as he has always done.

The coach is no stranger to such competition, having served as assistant coach and eventual head coach of Cotonsport of Garoua back in 2021 when they reached the semi-finals of the Confederation Cup.

The former player also has stints as coach with the Cameroon U20 national team, having won the 2020 UNIFFAC U20 tournament in Equatorial Guinea, and has coached various youth teams.

His experience in continental competitions, coupled with the club’s history in such tournaments, is expected to produce positive results against the debutants from Liberia.

In the past, Fovu made one appearance in the CAF Champions League (in 2001, reaching the First Round) and one appearance in the CAF Confederation Cup (in 2011 during the Preliminary Round). They also participated in the CAF Winner’s Cup in 2002, reaching the second Round.

The team boasts a championship title from 2002, three Cup of Cameroon trophies (in 2001, 2010, and 2023), and two Cameroon Super Cup victories (in 2000 and 2001). Additionally, they were finalists in the Uniffac Cup in 2006.

Paynesville FC, although new to CAF competitions, boasts a roster filled with seasoned players who have competed in the Champions League, Confederation Cup, and represented the national team.

Coach Dominic Savice, who has successfully guided the team from the third division to the first division within three years, faces the challenge of delivering results, especially given the significant investments made in the club.

The first-leg of the encounter is scheduled to take place in Paynesville, Liberia, between August 16-18, 2024, with the return-leg set for Cameroon between August 23-25.

The winner of this match will advance to face Stade Malien of Mali in the 2nd Preliminary Round.
