  • Congo has been kicked out of CHAN 2025 by CAF
  • The team broke rules by playing an illegal player during qualifiers
  • Equatorial Guinea takes Congo’s spot, and the tournament continues in August

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially disqualified Congo from the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) due to serious administrative violations.

The disqualification stems from Congo fielding an ineligible player, Japhet Eloi Mankou Nguembete, during qualification matches against Equatorial Guinea.

It was revealed that Eloi had transferred from his local club in Congo to Leones Vegetarianos in Equatorial Guinea prior to the match. However, Congo failed to present the necessary valid national licenses, a crucial requirement for player eligibility.

After a thorough investigation, CAF’s disciplinary board ruled that Congo breached tournament regulations.

As a result, Congo automatically loses both qualifying matches 3-0 by forfeit. Equatorial Guinea will replace Congo in Group D, and the Congolese Football Federation has been fined $10,000.

The tournament, scheduled for August 2025 across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, will proceed as planned with the adjusted group standings.
