Ahead of the Women’s Africa cup of nations to be played in Morroco this year, the indomitable Lionesses have commenced a one week training in Yaoundé following the call up of 25 home based players to camp.
Under the guidance of Josephine Mike Ndoumou, assistant coach of the Indomitable Lionesses, the girls present are focusing on building physicality and match practice at the Mundi sports complex where they are based.
For the first preparatory stage, Coach Mike chose to work with players in Cameroon’s local leagues especially the Guinness super league, the toptier of women’s football in Cameroon. These players will struggle to be at the top of their game during this training camp as they eye a spot on the final list of players to represent Cameroon at the final of the tournament in a month.
The AFCON preparation will be further enhanced by the anticipated arrival of players based abroad in a few weeks.
However, Exactly one month to the start of the competition, Cameroon is without a head coach, raising concerns of whether the team will travel with a newly appointed head coach following the sacking of Coach Jean Baptiste Bisseck or under an interim management.
Cameroon is expected to compete in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled from 17 March to 3 April, as this 14th edition of the women’s football competition will feature 16 teams for the first time, expanded from 12 at the previous tournament.
The Lionnesses who were granted qualification through the back door following the expansion of teams after initially failing to qualify, are drawn in Group D against Ghana, Mali and new comers Cabo Verde. Their base will be the City of FES.
Other than the trophy, these participating teams will also be battling for qualification tickets to the 2027 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, automatically reserved for the four semi-finalists.
