In Wednesday’s fixtures of the TotalEnergies Africa’s Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, two thrilling matches were played in Group B.

Mauritania secured a 1-0 victory over 10-man Burkina Faso, while Madagascar beat the Central African Republic 2-0.

Mauritania’s victory was marked by El Mami Tetah’s decisive penalty kick in first-half stoppage time. The penalty was awarded after Kalifa Nikièma fouled Mauritania’s winger in the area, and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review confirmed the decision.

Abdoulaye Touré was dismissed for violent conduct and received a red card after a VAR check, leaving Burkina Faso to play with 10 men for the remainder of the match. This win propelled Mauritania to second place in Group B with seven points from four matches, while Burkina Faso remains on three points and is eliminated from the tournament with one game left to play.

In the other match, Madagascar’s win over the Central African Republic was sealed with two goals in the second half.

Toky Rakotondraibe scored in the 84th minute when a blocked shot fell to him, and he coolly slotted the ball into the bottom left corner. Lalaina Rafanomezantsoa sealed the win with a clinical finish past the goalkeeper in the 90+4 minute, assisted by Rakotondraibe.

This victory marked Madagascar’s first win in the tournament, keeping their qualification hopes alive. For the Central African Republic, the loss confirmed their elimination from the championship, extending their streak of group-stage exits to three in three CHAN appearances.

After the match, Madagascar moved into second place in Group B with four points, leapfrogging the Central African Republic.

Their fate now depends on the outcome of the later match between Burkina Faso and Mauritania. These matches have significantly impacted the Group B standings, with Mauritania and Madagascar keeping their qualification hopes alive. Burkina Faso and the Central African Republic, on the other hand, have been eliminated from the tournament. The VAR played a crucial role in both matches, ensuring that justice was served on the pitch.

With the Group B standings heating up, all eyes will be on the upcoming matches to see who will emerge victorious and secure a spot in the next round.
