Reigning champions of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN), Senegal, were greeted to a warm reception by locals and compatriots when they arrived Zanzibar, Tanzania, ahead of the start of the 2024 edition of the tournament for players plying their trade in their national championships.
The team guided by coach Souleymane Diallo touched down the Abeid Amani International Airport this Wednesday, July 30, from Arusha following the end of their preparations camp and pre-tournament warm up matches.
When coach Souleymane Diallo led the team out of the plane, there were vibrant dance groups and a ceremonial parade to showcase the competition’s beauty beyond the pitch.

Their arrival means Senegal becomes the second of four expected teams to arrive in Zanzibar, joining Nigeria that has been in town for over a week.
Having settled in, the home-based Teranga Lions are poised to challenge Africa’s top domestic talents, hoping to repeat their 2022 feat.
With Senegal’s sights on their title defense, the team has been working tirelessly to fine-tune tactics.

Preparations and Strategy
The team’s early preparations included a two-week residential training camp at the Jules François Bocandé Technical Development Centre in Toubab Dialaw, where they lined up a couple of high-profile friendlies, including two matches against Guinea which they won one and played a tie in the other. They fell by the same 1-2 score to Tanzania and Uganda in the other friendlies in Arusha.
Having completed the phase of friendly matches, its business time for the Teranga Lions.
Senegal in group D will kickstart their defense against Nigeria on August 5, before games against Sudan on August 9 and Congo on August 12 respectively.
Just like previous editions, the 2024 CHAN promises to be an exhilarating tournament, with all teams vying for continental supremacy.
This edition of the CHAN will feature 19 teams, with matches to be played in Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Kampala, and Zanzibar.
