Canon Yaounde have picked up their second win in two outings following a 2-0 win against eternal rivals PWD of Bamenda this Monday in a delayed match day two fixture in the 2023/24 MTN Elite One championship.
Phillipe Essama Bertin and Steve Belobo scored in either half as the coach Vincent Atangana’s Canon condemned PWD to their first defeat of the season.
The neptunal contest in front of the packed crowd at the Ngoa Ekelle stadium live up didn’t disappoint especially for the home fans who came hoping their team will follow up their win last weekend.
The compact approach from coach Dieudonne Nke’s PWD – also fresh from a win in match day one – made it difficult for his former club to impose the free flowing approach of last time out.
The mystical clubs traded near misses in the opening half-hour, though Canon looked more incisive and closer to getting the breakthrough.
Former Panthere Nde skipper, Essama found the breakthrough just around the interval- a deserving lead for Bahaza Go-Ah and co, given their first half efforts.
Essama bundled home a lose ball into the area to make it 1-0 for the 2002 champions.
Substitute Erunk Steve Belobo secured the victory 14 minutes from time, announcing his arrival from YAFOOT in style.
Belobo beat Ahmada Saliou from close range, following up a poor clearance from the former Cotonsport shot stopper.
The win makes it two in two games to mark a dream start to the new season and the coach Atangana era.
Canon will travel to Garoua to confront Gazelle FA in match day three of the championship while PWD returns to town to confront struggling Colombe of Dja who are winless in the league this Calendar year.
