Cameroon’s Samuel Kotto joins Gent

Belgian top-flight championship side FC Gent have completed the signing of Cameroonian defender Samuel Junior Kotto on a three-year-deal from Malmö.

According to a release from the Swedish club, the former APEJES of Mfou defender joined the club this Tuesday after completion of medicals and other formalities to enable his acquisition.

Kotto, who spent last season on loan at Varnamo was unveiled before the Media and has been registered as one of the acquisitions of the current transfer window.

The 21-year-old central defender has cost the side around €800k, with an extra €500k in bonuses. Gent have also already agreed personal terms with the defender with details not disclosed.

Kotto, formerly of APEJES of Mfou joined Malmö back in 2022 and was immediately loaned out to BK Olympic. He spent a season with the club before returning to his parent club. Kotto has only made one appearance for Malmö since joining.

He has had two other loan spells, one with Landskrona BoIS and the other last season with IFK Varnamo.

He impressed during his time with the latter, scoring once in 23 appearances across both the Swedish cup and the Allsvenskan. The side finished on the 14th and had to fight for survival in the relegation play-off.

They survived with a 3-2 aggregate win over Kotto’s former side Landskrona.

Kotto made a name for himself during his time in Cameroon and even earned a call up to the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon before moving abroad.
