The Cameroon handball Lionesses faced a disappointing exit from the African Women’s Handball Championship after succumbing to Senegal with a final score of 19-26.
This loss not only marks an early departure from the tournament but also extinguishes their aspirations of qualifying for the prestigious 2025 IHF Women’s World Championship.
The match unfolded with Cameroon trailing at halftime, ending the first half with a score of 10-14. Despite their efforts, they were unable to close the gap in the second half, which concluded at 9-12 in favor of Senegal.
Critics have pointed to the late disbursement of player bonuses by the ministry as a significant factor in this defeat. The players took to the court for their opening match without clarity on when or how they would receive their hard-earned bonuses, which undoubtedly affected their morale and focus.
This uncertainty undermined weeks of intensive training and preparation in Japoma, Douala, leaving them at a disadvantage in such a high-stakes environment.
In other quarterfinal action, Egypt edged out host nation DRC with a nail-biting score of 23-22. The match was highlighted by an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Aly Gomaa Mai, who delivered an impressive 11 saves, proving crucial in securing Egypt’s place in the semifinals.
Defending champions Angola continued their quest for glory by decisively defeating Algeria 34-15. The Pearls of Angola showcased their dominance on both ends of the court, demonstrating exceptional teamwork and strategic execution.
With this victory, Angola not only advanced to the semifinals but also secured their 18th qualification for the IHF World Championship in 2025, solidifying their status as a powerhouse in African handball.
On the other hand, the Congolese team faced disappointment as they fell short against Tunisia, losing by four points with a final score of 28-24. Despite their valiant effort, Tunisia’s disciplined defense and effective counterattacks proved too much for Congo to handle.
As the tournament progresses, the bottom four teams have shifted their focus to competing in the President’s Cup.
The 26th edition of the CAN Women’s Handball competition is set to continue in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) until December 7, 2024.
