FECAFOOT has officially teased the much-anticipated 2024 Ballon d’Or Awards, reigniting excitement among fans of Cameroon football.
A video teaser was posted on the awards’ official page on Friday, February 14, 2025, signaling the return of the prestigious event after its last edition in 2023, where Ricardo Emmanuel Mahop was crowned the winner.
While the exact date for this year’s ceremony is yet to be confirmed, it is expected to take place later this month. The announcement has sparked discussions about potential nominees and the impact of player transfers on this year’s awards.
Last season saw some remarkable performances in Cameroon’s Elite One league, with several players standing out in their respective roles. Jules Armand Kooh emerged as the league’s top scorer with an incredible 22 goals, playing a pivotal role in helping Astres of Douala maintain their Elite One status. His stellar season earned him a move to Tunisia, where he signed a three-year contract with Club Africain.
Among goalkeepers, Haschou Kerrido was instrumental in leading Stade Renard to the playoffs, while Idrissou Nfor kept a clean sheet in the final to help Colombe sportive win the prestigious Cup of Cameroon.
Other notable mentions include Eric Parfait Djomeni, who won the league with Victoria United, and Samuel Elimbi, who played a key role in keeping Union Sportive afloat during the playoffs.
As speculation grows around potential nominees for this year’s awards, several names have emerged as strong contenders for the coveted Best Player category. Among them is Nchindo John Bosco, who had over 14 goal contributions for Yong Sport Academy, guiding them close to a title before they narrowly missed out. He now plays for Cotonsport.
Another standout is Wilfred Douala Nathan, whose heroics for Victoria United, including scoring the decisive goal in the final playoff match, make him a strong candidate. Similarly, Katche Boris, who scored 17 goals in his debut Elite One season and helped Bamboutos maintain its status before moving to play for Telecom Egypt SC, is a potential nominee.
Other noteworthy mentions include Kooh himself and Boris Mfoumou, who netted 16 goals for AS Fortuna, helping them top the playoff-down table and secure their elite status.
The Best Young Player category is also shaping up to be highly competitive, with rising stars like Jude Enow of Victoria United and Tresor Bembong, formerly of Aigle, catching attention for their performances last season. Another promising talent is Douala Nathan, whose contributions may not go unnoticed.
In the goalkeeping category, several names could be in contention based on their performances. Haschou Kerrido took Stade Renard to the playoff, while Idrissou Nfor kept a clean sheet to win the cup of cameroon with colombe. Eric Parfait Djomeni won the league with victoria united and Samuel Elimbi helped Union sportive stay afloat in the playoff down.
While we welcome Fecafoot’s initiative to host this prestigious event once again, it is worth noting that many of last season’s top performers have since moved to other leagues, including standout players like Jules Armand Kooh and Katche Boris. Could their departure mar their chances of winning, as was allegedly the case with Che Malone last year against Emmanuel Mahop? Let’s wait and see.
