  • Cameroon secured a stunning upset victory over Brazil in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament, winning 77-74
  • Jeremiah Hill’s 22 points, along with disciplined defense, propelled the Basketball Lions to a semifinal spot
  • They will now face the Latvian hosts for a chance to advance to the final and secure an automatic berth in the 2024 Men’s Olympic Basketball Tournament.

Cameroon emerged victorious against Brazil, sealing a semifinal berth with a 77-74 win in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

The Basketball Lions showcased disciplined defense and controlled the pace, effectively neutralizing Brazil’s individual talent.

Jeremiah Hill led the charge for the basketball lions, contributing 22 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists.

Despite Brazil’s initial control, the Indomitable Lions rallied, embarking on a remarkable 23-0 run between the first and second quarters. Although Brazil narrowed the gap, it wasn’t enough to deny Cameroon a ticket to the Semi-Finals.

Hill’s clutch three-pointers (6 of 13), including a buzzer-beater to close the first quarter, made a significant impact. The team’s defensive prowess, marked by 9 steals, forced Brazil into 14 turnovers. Meanwhile, Brice Eyaga Bidias added 15 crucial points.

Reacting post game, Alfred Aboya, coach of the Cameroon national team expressed satisfaction with his teams performance and how the first half efforts were far greater than the second half input

“Like I said yesterday, I love my team character. Those kids are fighters, so they came ready to play. The first half showed how hungry we were, but in the second half it kinda got away from us a little bit.” Cameroon head coach, Alfred Aboya

The man of the game, Jeremiah Hills, one who permitted Cameroon to reach this stage, thanks to his outstanding performance against Senegal in Nigeria shared the teams drive in this competition.

“We showed ourselves, we played with pace. When we do that, we’re really hard to beat. They were able to cut our speed, but we trusted each other.” Cameroon standout, Jeremiah Hill

Cameroon, as the second-best team in Group B, will now face the Latvian hosts in the semifinals. The winners of the semifinal clash will secure a spot in the final, with the champion earning an automatic qualification for the 2024 Men’s Olympic Basketball Tournament.

Mind you, Cameroon is the lone African nation still participating at the Olympic qualifying tournament. Cote D’Ivoire , Egypt and Angola have all been knocked out.
