  • Cameroon’s Intermediate Lions star and CHAN 2022 finalist, Joel Paten has been sidelined by Union of Douala due to his hairstyle, which management has labeled “extravagant.”
  • This decision follows a directive from the new general manager, who emphasized the importance of maintaining a presentable appearance among players
  • Paten’s absence was notably felt during a recent 0-2 defeat against Atlantic of Kribi, as he now faces the challenge of complying with club regulations to secure his place in the squad

Union of Douala midfielder Joel Paten has found himself in a controversial situation, sidelined by the club due to his hairstyle, which management deemed “extravagant.”

This decision stems from a directive issued during the pre-season recruitment phase, where the new general manager Robert Tamze, emphasized the need for players to maintain a presentable appearance, explicitly discouraging flamboyant hairstyles.

Sources close to the club revealed that all players were informed of this policy prior to the start of training except the midfielder who was part of the Cameroon squad at the last African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament in Algeria.

While most adhered to the guidelines, Paten’s refusal to comply has led to his exclusion from matchday squads. Notably, he was absent from the lineup during Union’s recent 0-2 defeat against Atlantic of Kribi, despite being the captain of the team in their first match of the pre-season tournament against Aigle of Moungo.

The club’s internal regulations state that Paten’s reintegration into the squad hinges on his willingness to cut his hair.

As Union navigates this dilemma, Paten’s future with the team remains uncertain, contingent on his compliance with management’s aesthetic expectations.

The former U20 player is one of the 13 players retained by management last season.
