  • Bonaventure Djonkep has replaced Daniel Breard in operational activities as coach of Cotonsport
  • Djonkep will be assisted by former Cotonsport head coach Minkreo Birwe in a tailor-made combination
  • Both coaches have signed their contracts and were unveiled this Sunday by the club’s management
  • Daniel Breard will keep the head coach title while Djonkep and Birwe will be the deciders in the life of players

Cotonsport of Garoua have appointed Bonaventure Djonkep and Minkreo Birwe as their head coach and deputy respectively for the next two seasons.

The decision was announced this Sunday as president Fernand Sadou unveiled both technicians to mark a new era in the life of the 18-time Cameroon top-flight champions, who have decided to keep Frenchman Daniel Bread as head coach with an advisory role after a disappointing season while hand operations to Djonkep and Birwe.

Cotonsport’s move to keep Breard is aimed avoiding the inconveniences of a contract termination as he still has a year left in his contract.

Coach Djonkep returns to Roumde Adja from Eding Sport of Lekie where he finished runners up in Elite One two seasons ago and narrowly missed promotion after their controversial relegation last season. Djonkep, winner of the Elite One championship with Cotonsport in a one-year stint that ended in 2003 is back home.

Birwe is another returnee. He first replaced Lionel Soccoia was head coach of Cotonsport in 2017 and guided them to the group stage of the CAF Champions League before making way for Ebwelle Bertin later in 2018.

The return of the trainers who know the Cotonsport mentality is likely the start of a rebuilding process for the Garoua outfit after a rare season without winning a trophy.

The new coaches and other members of the technical crew held a meeting with the players at the club’s headquarters on Sunday and will get to work immediately. Their focus will be on building a formidable squad capable of challenging last year’s champions, Victoria United FC and other contenders with hopes of winning their 19th League title.

Cotonsport of Garoua will begin pre-season training on Monday August in their home town while waiting for FECAFOOT to announce resumption day for the respective championships.

Cotonsport will compete in the 16-club MTN Elite One championship next season, hoping to recapture their predatory instincts that have made them a reference in the country and beyond in the past 34 years in the top-flight championship.
