  • AS Fortuna players and staff have allegedly not been paid since the start of the season
  • The club’s players have now refused to participate in training and matches due to the current situation
  • Fortuna players like their peers in other clubs are living precariously due to the lack of means at club’s level

The players of Cameroon top-flight championship side AS Fortuna of Mfou have announced an immediate end to their participation in activities of the club for the 2024/25 season due to non-payment of salaries and bonuses.

A release sent to the public this Tuesday, February 4 has it that the entire squad of players for the club have decided to discontinue training and match activities related to the club because of non-payment of training and match bonuses since the start of the season.

“Dear members of administration of AS Fortuna, we are coming to you as a unit to draw your attention to our situation vis-a-vis payments of match bonuses and salaries since the start of the season.”

The players also expressed discontent about the fact that their injured colleagues have not been looked after by their club or even the federation that promised insurance for footballers when Eto’o came to power in 2021.

“We will also like to draw your attention to the fact that some of our injured colleagues like George Landry Belamo, Mbarga Ngankou and James Abada have been abandoned.”

“We will like to inform you that due to the present situation we are discontinuing our engagement with the club’s matches and training sessions till our bonuses are paid,” Boris Ngoumou and mates wrote.

This unpleasant situation comes barely 48 hours after AS Fortuna played a 2-2 draw against a Canon Yaoundé side whose players also staged a strike action before the start of the season.

AS Fortuna of Mfou joins the likes of Union Sportif of Douala, Fovu of Baham, Aigle Royal of Menoua amongst others whose players have publicly expressed discontent amount the situation of their renumeration at a time Cameroon football is trumpeted to be waxing strong under Dr Samuel Eto’o Fils.

The situation is quite worrying as the Club’s founder Roger Noah passed on in 2024.

A few weeks ago, the country’s Minister of Sports had a meeting with club owners which resulted in government disbursing 560 millions FCFA for clubs, but unfortunately that money is yet to get to the club’s to date.

AS Fortuna is currently 14th in the MTN Elite One championship with ten points from ten games.
