Cameroon suffered a 66-70 defeat against Montenegro in their opening game of the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Riga, Latvia on Wednesday July 3, 2024.
Despite a strong start, the Indomitable Lions were unable to overcome Montenegro’s size and rebounding advantage. Cameroon led by three points at halftime, but Montenegro rallied in the second half, outscoring them 20-10 in the crucial third quarter to take control of the game.
The Lions point guards had 19.5 points in their two losing efforts . Perry has been shooting 7 of 26 in his first games in Riga but banked in the and 1 play to close the encounter. Jeremiah Hills had 10 points and nine assists but struggled to make an overall impact.
Brice Eyaga Bidias stood out for Cameroon, scoring 14 points, but the team struggled to contain Montenegro’s veteran center Nikola Vucevic, who dominated the interior.
Cameroon head coach Alfred Aboya acknowledged his team’s lack of size as a key factor in the defeat, saying “Our lack of size was apparent, as we gave up 17 offensive rebounds. They brought a great fight.”
“I think the same thing. They out-rebounded us, that’s where the game was decided.” Cameroon forward, Bryce Eyaga chipped in.
Cameroon will look to bounce back when they face Brazil on July 4, 2024, in their next group stage match. They will need to improve their rebounding and interior defense if they hope to keep their Olympic qualifying hopes alive.
