- The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon will face Zimbabwe this Tuesday without adequate training
- The cancellation of their training sessions and the pre-match press conference has sparked rumors in the Zimbabwe camp about Cameroon’s participation in the match
- Coach Marc Brys will need to quickly adapt his strategy, as he will be without his assistant and has limited preparation time ahead of the encounter
The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon will take on Zimbabwe in their second 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at 5pm local time on Tuesday at the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala, Uganda. However, Cameroon has been hampered by a lack of training leading up to the crucial match.
Cameroon arrived in Uganda on Saturday after their 1-0 win over Namibia, but have not had any training sessions in the past 48 hours. The team had planned a training session on Sunday upon arrival and another on Monday at noon at the Mandela National Stadium.
However, due to the Uganda vs Congo match, Monday’s session was moved to 5pm at the Kampala International School.
But the team’s late arrival due to a three-hour traffic jam meant they couldn’t make it to the new training site in time. “The Lions couldn’t make it to the new training site on time due to a three-hour traffic jam,” said Cyrille Tollo, an advisor to the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education.
Not only was the training session canceled, but the usual pre-match press conference was also not organized. This has fueled rumors in the Zimbabwe camp that Cameroon may not play the game. “There’s been news going around that the team (Cameroon) may not play but we don’t really focus on that,” said Zimbabwe skipper Marshall Munetsi after Monday’s training session.
Cameroon coach Marc Brys will have to make do without his assistant Joachim Mununga, who was not registered by the Cameroon Football Federation. Brys will be accompanied by the FECAFOOT-appointed staff of Martin Ndtoungou Mpile, David Pagou, Idriss Carlos Kameni, Christophe Manouvrier, Patrick Joël Fotso, and Elias Kaleguem Fomekong.
Cameroon and Zimbabwe have met nine times previously, with Cameroon winning six games and Zimbabwe winning three. Their last encounter was a 5-3 win for Cameroon in a 2004 AFCON match.
With limited preparation time, Brys will need to rally his team to overcome Zimbabwe and maintain their winning start to the qualifiers. The absence of a proper training camp could prove costly for the Indomitable Lions.
