The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has condemned what it described as “unacceptable behaviour” by players and officials during the quarter-finals of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025, and has opened formal disciplinary investigations into incidents involving two matches.
CAF said on Monday that it had reviewed match reports and video footage that suggest some players and team officials behaved in ways that breached the competition’s conduct regulations. The cases have been referred to the federation’s Disciplinary Board for further inquiry and potential sanctions.
The investigations focus on incidents during the Cameroon vs Morocco match and the Algeria vs Nigeria tie. Specific details of the alleged misconduct were not released by CAF, but the governing body stressed that it
strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour during matches, especially conduct directed at referees or match organisers.”
In addition to on-field confrontations, CAF said it is also examining footage of alleged misconduct by members of the media in the mixed zone. Any breaches of professional standards identified during the review could also lead to action.
The move comes amid heightened tensions following the Nigeria 2-0 win over Algeria in Marrakech, where several players and technical staff reportedly confronted match officials after the final whistle. Some members of the Algerian delegation are said to have followed referees into the tunnel leading to the dressing rooms — an act CAF described as a “clear violation” of competition rules.
Cameroonian media have also criticised officiating in their country’s 2-0 defeat by hosts Morocco, arguing that decisions influenced the flow of the game, though CAF’s statement did not specify individual actions in that fixture.
CAF said investigations will consider official match reports, referee submissions and all available video evidence. If misconduct is proven, appropriate disciplinary measures – including fines, suspensions or other sanctions – could be imposed in accordance with its regulations.
The AFCON tournament continues to draw scrutiny as it progresses toward the semi-final stage.
