  • The situation escalated when RS Berkane was detained at the airport due to a jersey dispute involving the Sahara region on the map of Morocco, leading to a standoff with Algerian officials
  • Following negotiations, CAF has facilitated accommodations for the team, with assurances that their equipment will be returned before the crucial Sunday’s 8pm game at the 5 July 1962 Stadium.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has stepped in to address the detainment of the RS Berkane football club equipment by Algerian authorities.

CAF has confirmed that the jerseys to be worn by RS Berkane, which include the map of Morocco with its Sahara, are in compliance with its regulations.

Instructing the Algerian Football Federation to urgently release the team’s equipment from customs to prevent any disruption to the upcoming semi-final match against the Algiers Medina Sports Union (USMA) this Sunday.

This directive follows a tense incident where the RS Berkane delegation was denied entry into Algeria, leading to their detention at Houari Boumédiène international airport.

The refusal was based on the team’s jerseys, which the Algerian government found contentious due to the inclusion of the disputed Sahara region in the map of Morocco.

The team found themselves marooned at the airport for an extended period, during which their gear was seized by the Algerian security personnel.

Images that garnered significant attention online depicted the RS Berkane players observing their Friday prayers within the confines of the airport.

CAF had scheduled a meeting on Friday April 19, with Algerian authorities and club representatives to seek a mutually agreeable solution.

The Algerian government has proposed that the team place stickers over the map of Morocco, a suggestion that was firmly rejected.

After prolonged discussions, the RS Berkane group has secured hotel accommodations, and their belongings are to be returned before Sunday’s match.
