  • Victoria United FC players and management have travelled to Ghana for the second-leg preliminary round clash of the CAF Champions League preliminary tie against 1996 FC Samartex
  • 17 players made the trip to Accra ahead of the game on Sunday
  • Samartex won the first-leg game 1-0 and need to prevent a defeat by more than one goal to progress to round two

Players and staff of Victoria United FC of Limbe left Cameroon on Wednesday, August 21 afternoon on board an Asky plane for Accra Ghana which will host their second-leg CAF Champions League preliminary stage match against 1996 FC Samartex on Sunday.

17 players accompanied by the technical and management staff of the club departed the country via the Douala international airport ahead of the tough task of overturning a one-goal deficit in the tie.

Emmanuel Mamah scored the only goal last Sunday at the Japoma Omnisport stadium to give the Ghanaians a slim advantage going into the return match on their own patch.

CAF Champions League debutants, Samartex are hoping to complete the job on home soil, to ensure progress into the second round of the competition for the current season. Victoria United FC on their part have had to deal with administrative issues that reduced their squad to just 13 players in the first-leg game, but it’s unclear if making the trip with 17 players is an indication of a greater workforce for coach David Deucalion Nganbe. Opopo as they are popularly known need to win by a two-goal margin to progress to the next round of the competition.

A win for either of the clubs will book an appointment against Morocco’s Raja Athletic Club or DGNN of Niger in the final qualifying round before the group stage of this season’s competition.

Group stage appearance for either Victoria United or FC Samartex will be a first in their history, but we are a long way from that.
