Hours after his dismissal, former Indomitable Lions coach Marc Brys has broken his silence, condemning FECAFOOT’s decision and raising questions about the timing and motivations behind his removal.
Reports from DHnet suggests, the Belgian coach described the move as “illegal and ridiculous,” adding that it was orchestrated by newly re-elected federation president Samuel Eto’o to install his own preferred technical staff.
Brys argued that dismantling the entire coaching structure just weeks before the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 was unprecedented and could seriously undermine Cameroon’s tournament preparations.
FECAFOOT dropped the news like a time bomb on Monday December 1, citing multiple alleged breaches of protocol. The federation claimed Brys failed to attend mandatory technical meetings, published squad lists without authorization, and conducted press conferences without prior approval. He was also accused of not submitting the required training programmes and match reports, violating sponsorship and marketing regulations, and displaying acts of insubordination or behavior deemed detrimental to the national team.
The 62-year-old was appointed head coach in April 2024 by Cameroon’s Ministry of Sports under a contract that created friction with FECAFOOT from day one. The arrangement highlighted ongoing tensions between the ministry and the federation over control of the national team.
Twenty-four hours after his dismissal, the Ministry of Sports had yet to issue a public statement, leaving questions about the government’s stance on Brys’ removal unanswered.
In his place, FECAFOOT has appointed Cotonsport’s David Pagou as head coach of the Indomitable Lions. He will be supported by assistant coaches Alexandre Belinga and Martin Ntoungou Mpile, all three of whom bring experience from Cameroon’s domestic football landscape.
The federation described the reshuffle as necessary to “stabilize the team” ahead of AFCON 2025 in Morocco. However, the abrupt change raises concerns about continuity and cohesion as Cameroon prepares for Africa’s premier football competition.
With AFCON 2025 approaching, the timing of this leadership change could hardly be more disruptive. Cameroon, a five-time African champion, now faces the challenge of integrating a new coaching philosophy and tactical approach on an accelerated timeline. Whether this gamble pays off or backfires will become clear when the tournament kicks off in Morocco. For now, the Indomitable Lions find themselves navigating uncertainty at the worst possible moment.
The situation continues to develop as stakeholders await a response from Cameroon’s Ministry of Sports and further clarification on the contractual and legal dimensions of Brys’ dismissal.
