The Nigeria Football Federation has announced the appointment of Bruno Labbadia as the new head coach of Nigeria’s senior men’s national team, the Super Eagles. This announcement was made on Tuesday via the NFF’s social media channels, stating that his appointment was effective immediately, though the duration of his contract was not specified.

Labbadia’s appointment comes 12 days before Nigeria kicks off their qualifying campaign for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, with a Group D . His first match in charge of the Super Eagles will be the AFCON qualifier at home against Benin on September 7, followed by an away match against Rwanda three days later.

The 58-year-old is known for his outstanding coaching career, which includes spells at Bayer Leverkusen, Hamburg, VfB Stuttgart, VfL Wolfsburg, and Hertha Berlin. This will be his first job outside of Germany.

Labbadia is renowned for his remarkable scoring ability, having netted at least 200 goals across the two divisions of German football.

Nigeria currently leads a group that includes Libya, with the top two teams qualifying. The German tactician will have a much tougher battle ahead of him as the Super Eagles resume their World Cup qualifying campaign.

After their four games in the African qualifying group C, Nigeria currently sits fifth out of six teams, although they still have six matches to play in order to win the group and secure a berth at the 2026 finals in North America.

Nigeria has faced a series of unfortunate events, as they had a poor start, especially after their impressive form in reaching the final stage of the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast at the beginning of the year.

Jose Peseiro, who coached the team during the last Africa Cup of Nations, departed, and was later replaced by Finidi George, who left after a series of unsuccessful games. Now, Bruno Labbadia has been appointed as the 37th head coach of the Super Eagles.
