Brenda Tabe inspired Athlone Town to a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory over Shelbourne this Saturday on matchday 14 of the Ireland Women’s Premier Division.
The match, held at Tolka Park, saw Shelbourne take an early lead in the 28th minute. However, Tabe showcased her sharp instincts in the 42nd minute, capitalizing on a defensive miscue by Shelbourne’s last defender, slotting home the equalizer.
This marked her second goal in just three appearances since joining the squad in July.
With the score tied at halftime, the tension escalated. In the 84th minute, Athlone was awarded a penalty following a reckless tackle. Kerry Brown stepped up and calmly converted the spot-kick, sealing the victory and handing Shelbourne their first defeat of the season.
This win propels Athlone to the top of the table with 34 points, putting them just five matches away from clinching their first SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division title since their promotion in 2020.
The club shared its excitement over this victory on its X handle writing
“15th of August 2020, we played our first game in the League of Ireland Women’s Premier Division. Playing Wexford Youths, we unfortunately lost 1-0, but 4 years later we sit top of the table with 5 games to play!.”
The team’s resilience and Tabe’s impactful performance were key in this pivotal match.
