Manchester City will face rivals Manchester United at Wembley in the traditional English football curtain-raiser this Saturday when Premier League champions Manchester City face FA Cup winners Manchester United in the Community Shield. Premier League champions will be looking for revenge after their FA Cup final defeat to Man United in the close of last season.
The game is the final pre-season clash for both sides before the beginning of the 2024/25 campaign.
This season’s Community Shield match up will see last season’s Premier League winners, Manchester City will clash with Manchester United that beat them in the final of the FA Cup last season.
It promises to be a busy afternoon for Cameroon goalkeeping export Andre Onana Onana as he will set out to stop Erling Haaland and co expected to be deployed by Pep Guardiola who still keeps fresh memories of how they lost the final during their last meeting at Wembley stadium on May 25.
Saturday game will mark the start of the new domestic football season. Both clubs will feel undercooked for the match by missing so many players both for Saturday’s contest itself but also throughout pre-season preparations due to three major international tournaments this summer.
So while neither coach will read too much into the result, they equally know the season curtain raiser will set the mood going into the real business of the Premier League a week later.
Both sides have endured difficult pre-season periods heading to the capital. City travelled to the United States for their friendlies but struggled without a host of first-team players who were still recovering from international tournaments.
United’s injury curse has struck again over the past few weeks with new £52m signing Leny Yoro set for three months on the sidelines. Fitness concerns haven’t helped results, with Erik ten Hag’s side having lost to Rosenborg, Arsenal and Liverpool in friendly encounters.
