Nigeria earned a 1-0 win over Guinea Bissau to end its four-match losing streak and return to winning ways after last Friday’s loss to the same opponent at the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifiers.
Nigeria made five changes to the team that suffered a 1-0 loss to Guinea Bissau last Friday in Abuja.
Kenneth Omeruo, Semi Ajayi, Frank Onyeka, Terem Moffi, and Moses Simon replaced Kevin Akpoguma, Wilfred Ndidi, Kelechi Iheanacho, Ademola Lookman, and Calvin Bassey.
After incessant pressure upfront in search of the first goal, the Super Eagles’ efforts were rewarded in the 29th minute as Bright Osayi-Samuel was fouled inside the box.
The referee pointed to the spot for a penalty which was well converted by Moses Simon in the 30th minute sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.
Jose Peseiro’s side had the chance to double the lead in the first half but Samuel Chukwueze missed.
Victor Osimhen almost doubles the lead in the 59th minute but his effort inside the box hit the bar.
Jo Aribo who replaced Moffi also had a chance inside the box but goalkeeper, Jonas Asvedo Mendes saved the attempt.
Nigeria secured the win which returned the team to the top of Group B with nine points ahead of Guinea Bissau (7 points), Sierra Leone (5 points), and Sao Tome (1 point).
