AFCON 2023: South Africa wrestle bronze medal from DR Congo

The Central African side had the brightest of chances to have taken the lead in the first half but missed them.

Hugo Broos’ side struggled to get their rhythm in the first first period as Sebastien Desbare’s side continued to seqrch for the opener.

Six minutes into the second half, Congo’s Simon Banza received a precise pass inside the box and took a shot that flew just wide of the right post.

The team had another chance in the 66th minute when Silas controlled a rebound inside the box. He only had the goalkeeper to beat, but his shot flew a whisker wide of the left post.

The chances kept on coming for Congo. In the 76th minute, a rebound found Chancel Mbemba in space inside the box, but his shot flew high over the bar.

Another golden chance came in the 90th minute for the Congolese. Fiston Mayele met a cross in the box and find some space for a shot. He produced an inaccurate effort that went wide of the right post.

With both sides not separated after 90 minutes, the game went into penalties to determine the winner of the third placed match.

South Africa won the game of wills 6-5 on penalties and emerged as the best third placed team at AFCON 2023.
