Argentina produced another emphatic performance on Saturday night, sweeping aside Burkina Faso 7-0 at the Monumental in Buenos Aires in a one-sided international friendly.

The World Cup runners-up needed only four minutes to open the scoring. Lautaro Martínez saw his penalty saved, but reacted quickest to the rebound to put Argentina ahead. The early goal opened the floodgates, with the Albiceleste adding two more before the 12-minute mark.

Burkina Faso struggled to cope with Argentina’s movement and intensity. Julián Álvarez’s effort was turned into his own net by Moumouni Diallo for the second, before Gianluca Prestianni made it 3-0 in the 12th minute with his first international goal.

The hosts continued to play with freedom and added two more goals before half-time. Nico Paz made it 4-0 in the 35th minute before Álvarez restored his name to the scoresheet a minute later, sending Argentina into the break with a commanding 5-0 lead.

There was still time for more after the restart. Franco Mastantuono scored his first goal for Argentina to make it 6-0, while Giuliano Simeone completed the rout late in the game. The seven-goal margin matched Argentina’s biggest victory under Lionel Scaloni, also a 7-0 win against Curaçao.

Lionel Messi was not involved as Argentina continued life after the 2026 World Cup, with the captain being saved for what is expected to be his final appearance for the national team against Benin on Tuesday. Instead, Scaloni used the occasion to give several of Argentina’s emerging stars a platform — and they responded in style.

For Burkina Faso, the evening was a difficult one against an Argentina side that never allowed them to settle. For Argentina, however, the 7-0 victory offered another reminder that even with the end of the Messi era approaching, there is plenty of talent ready to carry the Albiceleste forward.
