Cameroon’s U20s made a bright start to the 2026 UNIFFAC U20 Tournament in Yaoundé, cruising to a 3-0 victory over Chad on Match Day One at the Olembe Stadium.
The young Indomitable Lions wasted little time taking control of the Group A encounter, with Jean François Manguele opening the scoring just two minutes into the game. Samuel Fonyuy Achu then doubled Cameroon’s advantage from the penalty spot in the 15th minute before completing his brace eight minutes later to put the hosts firmly in command.
Cameroon went into the break with a comfortable three-goal cushion and largely controlled proceedings, although the second half produced a less convincing performance from the hosts as Chad managed to limit further damage.
Head coach Yvan Kemnoe acknowledged the drop in intensity after the interval, while also admitting that Cameroon’s substitutes failed to make the expected impact.
“I acknowledge the fact that the team dropped a little in the second half. We already took note of all loopholes and will work on them immediately. The substitutes did not also provide the required impact,” Kemnoe said after the match.
Despite the second-half shortcomings, the 3-0 victory gives Cameroon an ideal start to their campaign as they look to make a strong impression on home soil. Fonyuy Achu’s brace and Manguele’s early strike also provide an encouraging attacking platform for the matches ahead.
Elsewhere on Match Day One, the other Group A fixture ended without a goal, leaving Cameroon in a strong position after the opening round of matches.
In Group B, DR Congo and Gabon also played out a goalless draw at Olembe Stadium. Neither side could find the breakthrough in a tightly contested encounter, with the 0-0 result ensuring both teams picked up a point from their opening fixture.
With the first round now complete, Cameroon will turn their attention to the next challenge as Kemnoe and his technical staff look to correct the weaknesses identified against Chad while maintaining the positive momentum from their opening victory.
