Defending champions Bayelsa Queens returned to winning ways in the 2025/26 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership Super Six with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over hosts Rivers Angels in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.

The highly anticipated South-South derby produced plenty of drama as the Prosperity Girls showed resilience to secure all three points after being pegged back in the second half.

Bayelsa Queens took the lead in the 29th minute when Chiamaka Ezekwugo rose highest inside the box to power home a header and give the Yenagoa-based side a deserved advantage heading into the break.

Rivers Angels responded after the interval and restored parity in the 58th minute through Abasiofon Uwah, who calmly converted from the penalty spot to make it 1-1.

The hosts’ joy was short-lived, however, as Bayelsa Queens regained the lead just five minutes later. Dorshima Taarnum struck the decisive goal in the 63rd minute, ensuring the defending champions emerged victorious in the keenly contested encounter.

Bayelsa Queens created the better chances throughout the match, registering eight shots on target compared to Rivers Angels’ four, while the Rivers goalkeeper was forced into six saves.

Match statistics showed Bayelsa Queens committed 13 fouls to Rivers Angels’ eight, with both teams earning a combined seven corners. The visitors were also flagged offside nine times and received the game’s only yellow card.

The victory gives Bayelsa Queens a major boost in their quest to retain the NWFL Premiership title after dropping points in their opening two Super Six matches.
