Preparations for the upcoming 31st edition of the mount Cameroon Race of Hope scheduled for February 21 are gathering momentum as the South West Regional League of Athletics has selected hostesses who will play a key role during the competition.

Speaking during the exercise at the league’s office premises, Eteke Andrew Njoh, President of the SW Regional League of Athletics, stated that the selection process garnered an overwhelming response, with more than 100 young women applying.

Today we are in our office premises where we are doing the selection of hostesses who will be helping the Federation accommodate people coming from far and wide,” Andrew Njoh said. “As you can see from their number, they are above 100, but unfortunately, we have very limited spaces.”

According to Eteki Andrew, only 30 hostesses will be selected, although efforts are being made to create opportunities for others during the event. Njoh explained that those not selected as hostesses would still be considered for other roles linked to the February 21 activities.

These girls have a very pivotal role to play,” he noted. “They are the ones who will be receiving our guests from far and wide, including the minister and his entourage, and they will also assist the minister in awarding laureates on the day of the event.”

He praised the enthusiasm and quality of the applicants, stressing that although only a limited number could be retained, all the candidates demonstrated commitment and suitability for the task.

We are happy having them every year. They always come in their numbers, and all of them are good, but we select only the best,” Njoh added.

Beyond the hostess selection, Andrew Njoh said preparations for the event are almost complete. Working alongside partners such as MTN, Biaka and HIBMAT, the league has made significant progress on the ground, including the clearing of the mountain track and the selection of athletes who will compete.

We have done so much already,” Njoh said. “The track of the mountain has been cleared, and the athletes who will take part on the 21st of February have been selected.”

The preparatory process is expected to continue in the coming days. Njoh disclosed that the selection of porters is scheduled for next Friday, after which officials for the event will be chosen as the final phase.

With the selection of hostesses ongoing, porters next week, and officials after that, we are confident that we will be fully ready to go on the 21st of February,” he said.

The Mount Cameroon Race of Hope is expected to attract athletes, officials and spectators from across the country, with organisers expressing optimism that all arrangements will be in place for a successful competition.
