- The victory takes the Lions to the lead of Group C with a total of 7 points, ahead of Senegal
The national basketball team of Cameroon has qualified for the AfroBasket 2025 tournament after defeating Gabon 82-67 in Rabat, Morocco. This marks their seventh consecutive qualification to the AfroBasket.
Jeremiah Hill’s impressive performance produced a remarkable 14 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 steals, and 1 block. The team’s strong start, which saw them take an early 6-1 lead, set the tone for the rest of the game.
Despite the valiant efforts of Gabon’s Chris Silva, who scored a game-high 34 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, Cameroon’s aggressive defense proved too strong. Silva’s impressive debut with the Gabonese team was marred by 13 turnovers, which proved costly.
Cameroon’s Ateba was another standout player, showcasing his outstanding three-point shooting prowess by going 5-for-7 from behind the arc and finishing with 16 points. Gabon’s inability to contain Ateba’s shooting was a major factor in their defeat.
The win was never in doubt, as Cameroon led by as many as 18 points in the second quarter. Gabon’s attempts to mount a comeback were stifled by Cameroon’s stifling defense, which forced 21 turnovers and limited Gabon to just 25 made free throws out of 43 attempts.
With this victory, Cameroon takes the provisional lead in Group C with 7 points, ahead of Senegal. They have also secured the first ticket to the AfroBasket 2025 tournament, which will be held in Angola in August.
