Lorina Essomba Mbega, a trailblazer in women’s saber fencing, clinched the gold medal at the African Senior Fencing Championship held in Morocco, marking a historic victory with a nail-biting 15-14 win in the final against Egypt’s Nagwa Nofal.

This triumph crowns her as the first African champion in this discipline.

Hailing from Cameroon, Lorina was born on December 16, 2002, and has been carving a name for herself in the fencing world. She claimed the title of French N2 junior champion in 2019, showcasing her burgeoning talent early on.

Despite a setback in 2024, where she narrowly missed Olympic qualification in Algiers, losing to Tunisia’s Yasmine Daghfous with a score of 10-15, Lorina demonstrated resilience and determination.

Later that year, Lorina rebounded spectacularly to secure the African champion title in Casablanca, seizing the opportunity in the absence of the favored competitor, Saoussen Boudiaf.

The 22nd African Fencing Championships unfolded from June 6 to 10, 2024, in the vibrant city of Casablanca, Morocco.

Hosted at the Salle Mohamed V indoor sporting arena, the event saw participation from fencers across 18 nations. While Egypt led the medal tally with a total of 22 medals, Tunisia followed with three.

Kenya and Cameroon proudly shared third place, each earning a gold medal. In total, nine African countries were honored with at least one medal, celebrating the spirit of excellence and competition that defines the championships.
