The Sao of Chad beat Mauritius Island 2-1 on Tuesday to complete an aggregate 3-1 win in the preliminary round of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) which caused scenes of wild celebrations back at home especially in the streets of Djamena.
The Sao entered the second-leg game with their tails up having picked up a 1-0 win in the reversed fixture in Cameroon last week.
Mauritius Island improved at home at the National Sports Complex Pitch 1 in Saint Pierre, in the return encounter and were duly rewarded. Jeremy Villeneuve gave the hosts the lead in the 45th minute, making it 1-1 on aggregate at the break.
Colombe of Dja’s Charles Tchouplaou on his debut leveled the score in the 74th minute before fellow debutant Ousmane Hassan sealed the victory with a goal deep into stoppage time, securing Chad’s progress with a 3-1 aggregate score.
The win completes the double for Chad for the first time in a continental game in 30 years, thus explaining the wild jubilation back at home.
Unlike in 2019 and 2021 due to suspension and withdrawal respectively plus tbe 2023 elimination by The Gambia, Chad will be in the group stage draw for the 2025 tournament.
The Central African nation is hoping for a favourable while dreaming to qualify for its first AFCON tournament after failing in their 36 previous attempts to reach the pinnacle of African football competitions.
ESwatini, Liberia and South Sudan also secured their passage into the group stage of the competition.
