Former Indomitable Lions of Cameroon trainer Clarence Clyde Seedorf has predicted Andre Onana will make a U-turn about his decision to retire from international football.
Last month, aged only 26 the Inter Milan keeper opted to end a journey which started some six years ago in Limbe.
Onana’s unceremonious retirement was provoked by the squabbles with members of the Cameroon Football fraternity during the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Onana, Cameroon’s undisputed number one keeper during the build up to the tournament only featured in the one-nil defeat to Switzerland. After that game he was suspended by the Cameroon football federation who classified him as an indiscipline player.
His departure has divided Cameroonians with some of the opinion that Onana’s ego brought the matter to this position while others blame the federation to the extent of saying they made a mountain out of an anth hill.
In the heart of this controversy and total lack of details about the feud, Dutchman Seedorf who played for Ajax, like Onana before becoming his manager for close to two years has stepped in to make an interesting revelation about Onana’s person and his call about the future.
“Onana is a great goalkeeper, an intelligent, curious man, who believes in himself. I think he will return to play for the national team,” Seedorf is quoted by Gazzetta Dello Sport this week.
Though Seedorf prediction looks like a farfetched situation especially looking at his words before departure, Seedorf is properly positioned to forecast and he could get it right about a man he knows so well.
“This is where I belong, I think that’s obvious.I’ll always be a fan of my Cameroon,” words from Onana which gives hopes though he insisted Inter Milan is the only subject in his mind now.
Andre Onana won 37 caps for Cameroon, featured at two Africa Cup of Nations tournaments – helping his nation won bronze on home soil early last year, before appearing in the FIFA World Cup which ended in a regrettable manner.
It will take some efforts to bring back the former Barcelona B and Fundesport Academy graduate. For now he is all focused on the three competitions Simone Inzaghi’s men are in for the 2022/23 season.
